Friesland is closer than you think. Some people think it is at the end of the world, but according to us, the world begins here. From Amsterdam, you can reach Fryslân in less than an hour and half an hour later you are in the center of the capital, Leeuwarden.
There is always enough space to park, and the parking fees are low. Sometimes you can even park for free. The train also gets you to Fryslân quickly. From Amsterdam Schiphol, you can reach the Love Fountain in Leeuwarden in two hours. This fountain is located opposite the station and was specially made for Leeuwarden by the Spanish artist Jaume Plensa.
See the distance as a time gain. Create space for new insights. You’ll see: Friesland is closer than you think, yet you’ll feel like you’re far, far away. Almost like another world with its own language, culture and varied nature.

It’s thanks to this mentality that our close-knit community has been building dikes and terp mounds for 2,000 years and has tamed and kept the water clean for the future. The province is big enough to make a difference and small enough to know each other well. And that’s the foundation for circular ambitions. In 2017, Friesland was declared the most circular region in the Netherlands. In 2025, our companies will open their doors to show why we are one of the most circular regions in Europe.
Vereniging Circulair Friesland is the beating heart of a network of independent pioneers who stand up for a sustainable lifestyle. An association with nearly 170 passionate members bursting with ideas and drive. Not to be the best, the fastest or the biggest, but to work together to ensure that our living environment remains as rich in nature and culture as possible. Because we’re extremely proud of the land and water we call home.
Our Frisian identity is felt every day in our language, traditions and history, and we’re proud of that. Our mentality is a combination of down-to-earth common sense and fiery passion. Frisians are go-getters who really put their backs into good ideas they’re enthusiastic about. Together with the community we make sure that projects get off the ground. Bottom-up, via short lines, decisive and quick.
We like accessible contact and mutual support. Whether you’re the mayor or the baker, we treat you the same way. We can achieve a great deal with short lines and mutual trust. Small efforts can lead to big results, and we know just how to combine self-interest and common interest so that everyone succeeds.
Friesland is the largest province in the Netherlands, with four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the only two Dark Sky Parks in the Netherlands, eleven cultural-historical cities, four Wadden Islands, numerous lakes, four national parks and two national landscapes. It is a hotbed of knowledge, innovation and circularity. Our ambitions are unconventional and limitless. A conference in Friesland is an experience you won’t get anywhere else in the Netherlands! If you want, the entire province can be your conference location. Our eleven historic cities are easily accessible, beautiful and full of history and culture.
