Strengthening biodiversity
It’s not just the guests who must be comfortable at De Laape, their 'tiny visitors' are also well taken care of. Various structures have been erected around the buildings to provide breeding, shelter and feeding places for bees, insects, amphibians and birds. With their help, the orchard produces a rich harvest of plums, apples and pears.
Sustainable water use
Water use is another important aspect of sustainability. This has also been carefully considered at De Laape: the vegetation on the roofs catches rainwater and that is used to flush the toilets.
Proud Frisian entrepreneur
Marrit is originally from Friesland and, in addition to De Laape, she and her husband run a training institute in Delft, where they train professionals in the energy sector. She uses the knowledge and experience she has gained in the field of energy and sustainabilityto make De Laape a lovely, comfortable and above all sustainable place: “We offer many possibilities for events, business meetings and conferences.
The facilities are modern and the f lexible spaces invite you to move about with an open mind and make sustainable choices for the future. The experience is the most important thing here. The vast landscape and tranquillity provide an environment where new ideas and insights can flourish.”
Her vision of the future
“We’re already doing very well, but I want to continue to innovate and look for ways to become even more environmentally friendly,” says Marrit matter-of-factly. “The farm has been renovated in such a way that it can last another 100 years. In the coming years we’ll continue to expand our facilities sustainably, focusing on the long term. I’m convinced you make better decisions in a healthy environment.“
Her guests feel the same way, as they regularly talk about the positive impact De Laape has on their own PHOTO: MITCH DE PON mindset. “The best compliment is when people tell us after a visit that they’re also making changes at home, like shopping more consciously or going outside more, simply because they can. This awareness and making small changes makes a big difference to your own wellbeing and that of the world.”
Marrit believes in the power of the community and likes to work with local suppliers to support the regional economy. With a strong focus on sustainability and a clear vision, she continues to innovate and find new ways to be even more environmentally friendly. De Laape is therefore also a source of inspiration for other companies in the events industry and shows that sustainability can go hand in hand with luxury and comfort.
From farm to modern event location
De Laape is a former farm in Warten, near Leeuwarden. Once a proud dairy farm, the focus later shifted to sheep and chickens. Ultimately, the farm underwent a major, sustainable renovation, reusing as many materials as possible. “I had plenty of ideas and I presented them to the professionals, who then started thinking along based on their expertise. Through brainstorming and sharing knowledge, the best plans emerged,” says Marrit. The two barns on the site have two parts: a meeting room in a greenhouse and sleeping quarters. In total, De Laape offers 18 comfortable single bedrooms, all with their own bathroom. These modern and sustainable facilities make De Laape ideal for executive retreats and business meetings.
De Laape, a sustainable event location located in the green heart of Friesland distinguishes itself from other locations thanks to the dedication of its owner Marrit Hoogwater. She has a clear vision on sustainability and a clear mission: every event must have as little impact on the environment as possible.
